What is SA 8000 Certification?

SA 8000:2014 (SA stands for Social Accountability) is a management system standard related to social responsibility within the SA 8000 standard series issued by Social Accountability International (SAI) in 2014 (commonly referred to as the 2014 version).

SA 8000 certification is one of the world's leading social certification standards for factories and organizations. Over the years, the standard has evolved into a comprehensive framework that enables certified organizations to demonstrate their commitment to fair treatment of workers across industries and countries.

SA 8000 is designed to comply with existing international agreements, including those of the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. These instruments are clearly reflected in the requirements of SA 8000.

SA 8000 is a widely recognized voluntary standard for companies interested in assessing and certifying labor practices within their own facilities as well as those of their suppliers and contractors. Certification can be granted through an independent third-party certification body.

Conditions for Applying SA 8000 Certification

When implementing SA 8000, enterprises must meet the requirements and demonstrate a serious commitment to compliance. Achieving this requires a rigorous implementation process. Similar to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, the Social Accountability Management System developed under SA 8000 is implemented based on the PDCA cycle (Plan – Do – Check – Act).

First, the organization must establish a social responsibility policy that meets employee working conditions and the requirements of SA 8000. It must comply with applicable laws, regulations, recommendations, and international agreements. Social policies must be documented for implementation and communication internally, externally, and within the community whenever possible. The organization must also commit to continual improvement.

Management representatives must be capable of ensuring compliance with SA 8000 requirements. The SA 8000 workers’ representative should be a non-management employee who serves as a communication channel and point of contact between management and employees throughout the organization.

The organization must establish a specific implementation plan and ensure a clear understanding of SA 8000 requirements. To effectively implement the standard, the organization should ensure:

  • Clearly defined roles, authorities, and responsibilities.
  • Training for newly recruited and temporary workers.
  • Regular training for existing employees.
  • Periodic awareness training programs to enhance understanding of social responsibility requirements.

The implementation of a Social Accountability Management System requires continuous monitoring to ensure ongoing compliance with SA 8000 requirements. Therefore, organizations must develop and maintain procedures required by the standard, including:

  • Maintaining records of suppliers’ commitments to social responsibility.
  • Obtaining commitments from suppliers to participate in monitoring activities when required.
  • Identifying nonconformities.
  • Informing suppliers and subcontractors of relevant changes.

Whenever nonconformities are identified, the organization must take immediate corrective actions, promptly determine root causes, and allocate sufficient resources for implementation. The organization must investigate all internal and external causes related to the nonconformity. Any retaliation against workers who report nonconformities is strictly prohibited.

Management reviews must be conducted systematically and periodically based on review and internal audit results to ensure that the Social Management System (SMS) is maintained and operates effectively.

Organizations must establish communication procedures with third parties regarding assessment results, inspections, monitoring activities, and performance data related to the standard. Depending on the nature and size of the organization, such information may also be communicated to employees and other stakeholders.

Records related to the implementation of the standard must be maintained to demonstrate compliance performance and provide evidence for third-party certification.

Is SA 8000 Mandatory?

The purpose of SA 8000 is to provide a voluntary and applicable framework for assessment based on the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, International Labour Organization conventions, and other internationally recognized principles.

Organizations seeking certification are required to comply with the standard through the establishment and maintenance of an effective and appropriate management system.

The above information provides an overview of the conditions for applying SA 8000 Certification – the Social Accountability Management System.
