ISO 29001 specifies requirements for a quality management system for organizations supplying products and services to the petroleum, petrochemical, and natural gas industries, aiming to manage risks and opportunities within the supply chain.
ISO 29001 was first published in December 2003 as a result of cooperation between the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the international petrochemical industry (administered by the American Petroleum Institute – API). ISO 29001 is particularly applicable to organizations involved in the supply chain of products/services in the oil, petrochemical, and natural gas industries.

The content of ISO 29001:2020 includes the fundamental requirements of ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management System) and, in addition, introduces specific requirements for the petroleum industry. These include emphasizing the importance of identifying and addressing product and service quality risks in a context with many potential hazards, focusing on the entire supply chain, recognizing industry interconnectivity, and highlighting the importance of quality across the entire network.
The target of ISO 29001:2020 certification includes organizations operating in the oil and gas industry, including suppliers of raw materials and supporting products: companies engaged in oil exploration, production, and processing of petroleum, petrochemicals, and natural gas; manufacturers providing equipment, services, and technology to the oil and gas industry; organizations responsible for installation and construction of oil and gas infrastructure, etc.
ISO 29001 plays a role as an international standard in the petroleum and chemical industries. Compliance with the standard helps create consistency and standardization within the industry, facilitating fairness and broader competitiveness.
